Richard Dawkins interviews creationist Wendy Wright

This is a interview from The Genius of Charles Darwin Uncut Interviews.

Wow, they certainly go around in circles a lot. My head was spinning by the end.

Dawkins approaches this interview with the idea to convince someone who is unconvincable about the fact of evolution, which is just not the way to do it - He presents the evidence to her and she simply denies that it even is. Instead, he gets caught in her loopy illogical fallacies.

For example, why didn't he counter her entrapping question of, "Does a completely mentally disabled person have a soul?" with, "Why would a loving god inflict such a condition upon a child?"? The presence of severe disability is not proof that god put a soul in there, it's proof of how inperfect the replication process is and how mutations occur!

These people don't want to use evidence of their own to disprove evolution, all they want to happen is for some seed of doubt to be planted in the minds of the uninformed.

Why does he even bother?

Does he really think it's a rational process that leads someone to believe dogmatically in creationism?

You can't fight someones faith. They take that as an affront to their world views.

This fool woman refuses to look at evidence, but rather thinks that because PEOPLE have made various mistakes (which are corrected later on), science is garbage.

Dawkins shouldn't waste time with these nitwits.

I agree...sometimes a debate is just not possible. Even a debate with a wall would be more worthwhile because at least you'd get that moment after you've said something where you can at least pretend like they're contemplating what you've just said.

NetRunnersays...

The whole "there is no evidence" thing is based on the idea of gaps in the fossil record. It's the logical equivalent of saying that having a photo albumn full of pictures that span your life isn't proof that you were once a child, because you only have snapshots of particular moments, and anything could have happened in between.

I think he nailed it - she's pursuing an emotional argument and bending the facts to fit - evolution seems uncaring and mean, she wants things to be run by a caring god. It'd be awesome if she accepted the facts as is and pursued whatever direction that took her with her compassion. Then she'd be a humanist.
