Totally getting a Koyaanisqatsi vibe from the Philip Glass-esque score and the hypnotic visuals.

If You Can't Tell, Does It Matter?

vil says...

They often choose scene lighting that makes it easier to do the CGI. So the CGI ends up looking fine and the scene is busy and technically sound but its no piece of art cinematographically. More like a cross between a video game and a TV production (even the thumbnail).

If its a good movie who cares. Im for a good story over nice pictures.

There are often far worse things in a movie than the CGI.

Ben-Hur Trailer

Why do all the non-effects shots look like they were shot with an iPhone? Is that a style now? Is there a professional cinematographer who is going for that syndicated cable drama look?

Does the name Liza Minnelli ring a bell ?

Any cinematographers/photographers here who can explain the artifact produced by her necklace at ~0:35?
I figured it must be a reaction of old film or lenses not being able to capture extreme brightness after already being set for a range of exposure, but that's just a half-informed guess.

going with the flow

Oh, the guy being filmed is a free-diver, so he can prob hold his breath for several minutes. I was just as impressed with the cinematographer - it's so well shot - at times he looks like he's falling, other times in outer space, so cool.

Here's another video they did together:

Amazing. That was so artful and poignant. The last two shots were just... fuck humans. Haha.

EDIT: Just watched the full film. It's very reminiscent of the "Quatsi" films. After some digging, it turns out Ron Fricke (the creator of Samsara) was the original cinematographer for those as well.
I really love films like this, and this is probably one of the best yet. Amazing look at at human existence.

"Stellar filmography"

Actually, it's called photography, or cinematography. (Most films have a "director of photography" or "cinematographer")

A "filmography" is a list of films.

Man of Steel Trailer #3

Sad George Lucas

chingalera says...

How about a Star Warz redux with Takashi Mike Directing with Janusz Kaminski (Saving Private Ryan) as director of photography???

Or how about Roman Polanski dir. with Peter Pau and Wing-hang Wong (The Killer-John Woo) cinematographers??

...anyone but Tattersal behind the fucking camera lens, please.

it's odd. for a long time, I've wanted someone to take over the reins of Star Wars because Lucas is a shit writer/director that surrounded himself with yes-men. I wanted him to see over and over what Star Wars could be like without his ego mucking shit up.

Hell I remember how adamant he used to be that VI was the end. It was the story of Anakin and when Anakin died, it's over. Now he's saying he'd been working on VII VIII and IX? Yeah fuck you George. You have become the evil empire.

At the same time though, now that it has happened and JJ is directing the next movie and George is out of the picture for good. I just derive no joy out of it. I would have preferred a lesser known director. I have enjoyed JJ's movies, but at the same time, the guy has his stupid tropes and hangups too.

I guess im just getting more and more fed up with Hollywood. Of course I'll go see the new movies. I'm so sick of the beating of the dead horse though

The Dark Knight Rises - Trailer #4

Hybrid says...

I don't really get that, regarding the "stagy" look. Besides Nolan uses the same cinematographer, Wally Pfister, on all his films, and The Dark Knight, Inception etc, were nothing short of breathtaking visually. So trust in them.

Regarding Bane. Nolan's Batman films have always been more grounded in reality. A huge CG like Bane pumped full of steroids would destroy the feel and groundedness of Nolan's Gotham. Bane is still very much like the comics though. Brutal. Highly intelligent. Cunning. Deadly.>> ^Deano:

After all these trailers something's beginning to bother me. Many of these scenes look a bit "stagy" which is a poor way of saying they don't look particularly believable or cinematic. I'm not sure why but there's something in the way Nolan does action/crowd scenes that looks a bit flimsy, as though you can begin to see everyone as extras and the sets as sets.
Maybe it needs better editing or photography in the first place. I know I'm grasping here, but there's a sense of unreality here.
Hey and wasn't Bane this huge monster with tanks or something? This Bane just looks like a regular guy.

Fun Day at the Boat Launch

ulysses1904 says...

Lack of framing, as in they filmed the water in the foreground instead of putting the freakin boat/truck/whatever in the middle of the frame.>> ^RhesusMonk:

Lol, lack of framing on the beach. What're you an ever-ready cinematographer?>> ^ulysses1904:
Is the person who filmed this stuck in the 1980s, when camcorders first came out? It's almost unwatchable from all the zooms, pans, cuts, shakiness and lack of framing.
